Quote of the Week: Sarah's Key

"Why so much pain, so much suffering, thought the girl. "It's because they hate us," Rachel had told her with a deep hoarse voice. "They hate Jews." Such hate, thought the girl. Why such hate? She had never hated anyone in her life, except perhaps a teacher, once." (page 87)

By Tatiana de Rosnay

My book club will discuss Sarah's Key on Thursday.

  4. I'm also looking forward to reading what you have to say about this book. That gorgeous cover catches my eye every time I see it on the shelf but have yet to hear anyone talk about it.

  10. Kaye - This was a good one! I'll post a combination review/book club discussion in a few days.

Diane - I actually listened to this, and it was very well done. I looked at a friend's copy to get the quote. You have a new profile pic! It's so nice to put a face with the name!!

Sandy - Getting quotes from an audio is just impossible for me! I looked in a friend's book to get this one.

Darlene - Nan left a link to her review, and I'll post a combination review/ book club discussion in a few days. I really liked the audio version!

Nan - I really enjoyed the audio and can't wait to see what the group thought of it. Overall, I much preferred the historical story to the contemporary section.

  11. Robby - I'll post my review along with some highlights of the book club discussion in a few days. This was a part of WWII history I knew absolutely nothing about. Thanks for commenting!

Matt - I liked the historical sections much more than the contemporary part. I'll post a full review, including book club reaction, in a few days.

Dana - We will have plenty to discuss on Thursday, I'm sure!

Staci - I knew absolutely nothing about the historical events this book described - how horrifying!! I think this will be a very lively meeting.

  14. I saw this in the airport yesterday, and I almost picked it up until I read something comparing it to Sophie's Choice. That, I couldn't bear, another novel asking a mother to choose...the horrors of war are so real to me, I can hardly read them in a novel. Then, tonight at book club, it came up again as a recommendation. Perhaps some day I will read it, I'm interested in the setting of France for one thing.

  17. Wondering what your book club thought of the book. It was one of my top 10 of 2009--even though it was so terrible sad.
